The Visit—Page 2
Dot brings in the refreshments and gets comfortable.
Dot: Allisa is down for a nap and the other kids are off at friends. What’s on your mind?
Esther: It’s hard to say without sounding like I’m complaining, but here goes. Evan and I have been married almost 11 years now. I love him dearly, but I have always wanted children. Even as a young girl I wanted to be a mommy. You know that. I’ve watched Punkie grow into a lovely young lady and how you’ve handled all the daily situations of being a mom and, well………I Want That! As the time keeps going by, I’ve had to try to adjust to the fact that we’re just not going to have a family. It’s hard sometimes.
Dot: Have you thought about adoption? Or maybe foster care?
Esther: Foster care is a wonderful thing, but it would tear me apart to have to give up a child after talking care of it and loving it. Evan and I discuss adoption off and on, but I can’t seem to get him really interested in it.
Dot: Well, some guys want their own flesh and blood children and have a hard time accepting someone else’s children.
Esther: Yes, I’m sure that’s the situation. Evan loves kids. He so enjoys playing with Allisa when we’re all together or we babysit for you.
