2. William ELLIS (James) was born in Bideford, England, and died in P.E.I., Canada. He married Hannah PENROSE, daughter of George Henry PENROSE.

William studied engineering in Bideford, England, and served apprenticeship in the shipyards where he learned draftsmanship and making molds for ships.

In 1800 he entered into partnership with George Chapman as a shipbuilding company at Cleaverhouses, Bideford, England, where they built warships for the Royal Navy, during 14 years of the Napoleonic wars. He married Hannah, and raised a family of six sons and three daughters. In the year 1814 he and his partner Chapman sold their shipyard at Cleavehouses and with a new partner, J.B. Chanter, he came to Prince Edward Island the same year, and there founded the Chanter & Ellis Shipyards of Bideford and Port Hill, P.E.I. One os his sons, Robert, remained in England, the rest of the family settled here. In the year 1826 Mr. Ellis purchased his partners interest in the shipyards here and continued on as the Ellis Shipyards at Bideford, Port Hill and Ellis River, P.E.I.(Source:History of The Ellis Family and The Descendants of William Ellis of Bideford, P.E.I. by Preston Ellis 1950)

3. John ELLIS (William, James). He married Elizabeth CAMPBELL.

John Ellis served many years of his early manhood in his father's shipyard, purchased a large tract of timber and farm land at Tyne Valley where he established a beautiful home. 4. Henry ELLIS (John, William, James) died in Northam, P.E.I., Canada. He married Clarisse GLOVER in Northam, P.E.I., Canada.

Henry Ellis of Northam, P.E.I., purchased a farm at Northam, which was then a dense forest. He put his efforts and his natural ability into improving his holdings and in a short time had a fine home established. He married Clarissa Glover of Tyne Valley and raised a family of nine children, all of whom have made a place for themselves in the business world. 5. John William ELLIS (Henry, John, William, James) was born 18 January 1865 in Northam, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and died 2 March 1955 in Miles City, Custer County, Montana. He married Eliza Ellen TURNER 1 June 1892, daughter of George TURNER and Sara McCLAINE.

JOHN W. was in the employ of the Northern Pacific R.R. for 10 years. He bought a ranch in Montana engaged in the cattle business continuing in this line until he retired in 1938 at the age of 75. He had been active in civic affairs in his adopted home, and was living in Miles City, Montana, with his son-in-law, Earl Comstock, at the age of 90 when he died.
